Holy shit so this.. this whole book has been on the actual Earth i thought they were just using that as the generic terra=earth thing

It isnt a le guin hainish cycle book if there isnt the COLD of WINTER in an ALIEN PLANET

Oh that right there thats just the horrors of the vastness of space and space travel/communication taking so long that it takes generations for information to arrive and so over time those generations of people become skeptical of the other side existing and all

Unexpectedly hopeful end to that... seems almost like false optimism with the whole last-second insane creatures of Winter reveal but theyve lasted 600 years theyll be fineee.

no way, an unhuman creature that comes out when winter comes. Where Have I seen This Before?

I like that the names of stuff the stranded humans have are like fucked versions of english. Erkar is probably air car, thiatr is probably theatre. Interesting that the place they all sleep in is the thiatr tho. maybe thiatr is the atrium??

"metal reed with a flower on top which you turned to make water run out of the reed" is the prettiest description of a faucet ive read

Probably so the whole joining up with the league of planets or whatever its called isnt rooted in getting one billion technology. Or just the whole not giving a modern smartphone to someone from the 1600s. But the invention of the wheel?!

Space cultural embargo is lowkey insane

paragraph right after says its earth years oops
