Finished "The Sword in the Stone" and the only thing I was able to attach to was merlyn. The talea of Arthur learning from animals held an eventual purpose, but without having him reaching towards a goal, or even being aware of the sword in the stone until the very end, it all felt happenstance and pointless.

Merlyn is so much more similar to the Disney sword in the stone than I was expecting. Very interesting juxtaposition to reading lord of the rings. 2 very different yet equally influential fantasy tales
