This series wants an adult plot, with lots of politics, but only has YA writing. So the characters & the application of politics (& the writing) are too shallow to properly convey the desired plot. Which winds up then forcing characters to be too stupid, too naive, or too unrealistically bad at their job, in order to allow manipulations, betrayals, and spying and theft to work. I hope it picks up in the end.
