Mr. Fang was a lean, long backed, stiff-necked middle-sized man...His face was stern, and much flushed. If he were really not in the habit of drinking rather more than was exactly good for him, he might have brought an action against his countenance for libel, and have recovered heavy damages" (113).

"...in this workhouse was born; on a day and date which I need not trouble myself to repeat...the item of mortality whose name is prefixed to the head of this chapter".

An item of mortality!

Such a telling way to describe a newborn...part of the remarkable opening paragraph in which Dickens adopts the voice of one who--like the society that surrounds Oliver--cannot be concerned with the newborn waif's identity.

It's been an unofficial goal of mine to, at some point, read all of Dickens' major works. Somehow, I haven't tackled this one yet.

Came across a nice copy at Half-Price Books the other day, so my future reading fate was pleasantly sealed :)
