"In a few minutes I'm going to swim .93 miles, ride a bike 24.8 miles and run a final 6.2 miles". That sounds so ridiculous compared to 1500 meters, 40 km and 10 km. Can't the translator just trust that people with enough erudition to be reading Murakami can cope with a few metric units? Or that anyone who is interested in reading a book about running has probably has watched the Olympics?
