Notes for 2 star review: The things I hated most were the dialog and the way that instead of having abilities that naturally dictate the action, Sigrud (and Tati and Shara) get whatever they need for plot armor, taking away any possibility of suspense. That is, the plot resolutions become obvious, but by way of info dumps.

The dialog is so bad. The aphorisms are so annoying. The plot twist was so unsubtly forecast. I can't believe that people whose tastes I otherwise share liked this book.

I'm just not sure these were books that needed sequels. What I liked so much in the first book was the way the mysteries of the world unfolded - the characters were just there to make it happen. Now what we're learning about the world feels fairly predictable, although I suppose there's still room for some interesting reveals, and the dumbness of the characters is getting in the way.

Maybe audiobooks just aren't for me. What my reading brain skims over, my listening brain picks up as bad prose.

I'm still coasting on the goodwill built by City of Stairs. The plot armor is putting me to sleep. I just zone out with all the the "Sigrud rolls to his left and realizes that he can use [any fucking thing] as a weapon".

The info dumps are more interesting than the actual story.
