It helps that the book has some genuinely funny moments. The ideas are great and I like the way the story is being told. It's just that the characters feel more like cartoons of people that are broken rather than plausible explorations of trauma's effect on people.

Really hope this one lightens up soon. It's enjoyable and interesting. But I've started to speed read because the whole plot line seems propelled by the mystery of why these people got so messed up. Not into the whole reading scene after scene of people being abused thing. I'm mostly sticking around to learn about the magic system and because of good reviews by people I trust.
