B2 Luke is the protagonist and narrator of the novel. He is young, mature, and fairly educated for his age. The book states he is seven years old and his choice of words are mature such as "a sufficient distance from our house" and "men who embraced pessimism." This shows he is either smart for 7 years or he is speaking from the future. In other ways, however, he matured after the hard work of being a cotton farmer.

F4 This story makes me feel more understanding of the difficult times of cotton farming without modern technology. The setting is the U.S. in 1952. The cast is picking cotton by hand and stuffing them into their sacks. The narrator describes the "...the sun was baking us," and "...five endless days of overwhelming heat." Reading this makes me more thankful for the technology of today.
