Also, I'm 10% in and I know she and her mom are afraid to leave the town limits, but I still have no clear sense of what the problem is / where her fear stemmed. Is it just general anxiety? From goodreads, I see three older siblings have died at age 18 but I haven't seen that in the book yet. also, she mentions sleeping in the boys' room, but I haven't met any brothers yet. Is she an only child at this point?

You mean in the two weeks she was in China? That's rather dramatic. We were also just literally introduced to Stef right before she left for China, so there's no context for her role in the family or even who the rest of the family is and what their family dynamic is. Pt here's a couple sentences about other siblings reacting to Stef's absence and I still don't feel I have a clear picture of this family. 2/2

Her transitions are abrupt and confusing. For example, she writes about how her older sister Stef goes with her mom to China. Stef goes to a fortune teller (we aren't told what the fortune teller says), after two weeks, Stef and the mom come back home. Then the next line says something like "we fell apart without Stef. She's the salt of the family." 1/2

The writing is a bit too reflective for me. Like she just spent two pages talking about her parents eating chicken and how the father smiles guiltily at eating the giblets and I'm sure the scene reveals character or something, but it's pretty boring. It reminds me of those creative writing classes where they tell you to show, not tell so you spend ages describing a mundane scene just to hint at character nuances.
