A really good read on how "witches", particularly in Europe, were labeled that not because they were pagan (although some were), but rather they were women who dared to find herbal and dietary cures for diseases, challenging the "medical profession" such as it was then. Most of the women were actually devout Christians.

Many times too simplistic in theory, but well written and gives food for thought.
