I was so hoping this novel wouldn't veer towards "magical realism", that bugbear of mine. No such luck, Kjaerstad just pulled some magical shit out of his ass.

Yikes! I was convinced this would end up being a solid five star novel, I was enjoying it tremendously, but just now I've been hit with a double whammy: first a miracle happened, for Christ sake (the protagonist climbs Jabel Musa and is miraculously cured of cancer) and a few pages later the omniscient narrator shows he (or she) doesn't know the difference between a virus and a bacterium!
