I guess I grabbed this from my to-read shelf in the faint hope it might shed some light on what makes Brexiteers tick.
No such luck so far.

Wellicht in mijn bespreking, volgende week of zo.)

"Heidegger is writing a form of poetry himself, although he continues to insist, as philosophers do, that this is how things are; it is not only a literary trick. Rereading him today, half of me says, 'What nonsense' while the other half is re-enchanted."

Mark is on page 96 of 493 of Leonardo: The Artist and the Man
On page 96, these are the facts we learned about Leonardo: he was born to Piero and Caterina, out of wedlock, in Vinci in 1452. Somewhere in his youth, he went to Florence where he was an apprentice to Andrea del Verrocchio.
That's it. The rest is embroidery. Nice embroidery, but still, I like facts better.

I was so hoping this novel wouldn't veer towards "magical realism", that bugbear of mine. No such luck, Kjaerstad just pulled some magical shit out of his ass.

Yikes! I was convinced this would end up being a solid five star novel, I was enjoying it tremendously, but just now I've been hit with a double whammy: first a miracle happened, for Christ sake (the protagonist climbs Jabel Musa and is miraculously cured of cancer) and a few pages later the omniscient narrator shows he (or she) doesn't know the difference between a virus and a bacterium!

A delight.
Highly original voice, wonderfully meandering phrases. What I would tentatively call "hyper-inflated realism". Intelligence and humour.
How do the pieces of a life fit together? Like this.

Another question the hardcore atheist has to answer with a no, according to JH: "Do you believe that the world is not completely knowable by science?"
In my opinion, the hardcorestest of atheists has to answer this with a yes, after Gödel.

Bad, bad start.
"Do you believe any part of a human being survives death?" A 'hardcore atheist' has to answer this question with a no, according to Jennifer Hecht.
But the elements in our body are part of us, aren't they? And they survive, don't they?
Not an enticing prospect, spending 500+ pages in the company of a sloppy thinker...
