Ch.2a Knowledge of the Lord: The Early Evangelical Movement (p.42-74) - Bebbington's contention that Evangelicalism is a product of the Enlightenment is neatly summarised in the last 3 sentences of the chapter. Evangelical activism sprang from the doctrine of assurance, which did away with the need for introspection (but not education). Assurance came from the Enlightenment view of the validity of experience.
