Dear Goodreads - Listening to a minority who is very vocal about how and why we choose to review and shelve books is not the way to go. Reviewers here are your lifeblood if you piss us off there are many sites and platforms where we can choose to go to.

Tori I agree, I enjoy goodreads, but I don't need it. I can post my reviews anywhere.

Has I know why they've done this but its not going to stop the meltdowns and its just censoring discussion if an author is behaving badly which is silly! Because when an author goes into a meltdown for being an arse - it goes everywhere and if people want to remind themselves of this especially if they hold views such as racism or homophobia people should have the right the know.

Tori I agree. This is like slapping a band aid on a gushing wound. *sigh*

Exactly! And the fact is drama always follows popular sites or social media platforms - its not going to go away. And its interesting to note its the popular or outspoken reviewers who are getting targeted by the authors who are having a meltdown. That's def not a coincidence.

Tori One main problem I foresee is that GR is placing to much importance on it's service. As VacuousMinx commented, only a relatively small percentage actively participate here. None of us who post here NEED to be here. There are too many other avenues in which we can pursue and post our views. While I'm not a fan of reactionary reviews, I am also not a fan of censoring people because a select few decide to have hissy fits.

Has I know and this is what GR is missing because there is definitely too many avenues. I don't like this because when I suss out a book and come across a shelving or a comment that highlights that an author has made offensive comments or beliefs such as homophobia - then I am thankful because I wont be supporting or reviewing them. Its totally ok if others want to do so but I get upset because I have been burned out in the past with authors such as Elizabeth Moon.

Tori As a business owner, I am constantly amazed by the number of people who insult their revenue. lol I have encountered customers who I think personally shouldn't be allowed internet access at all. But, I do not insult them or engage them. I rant in private then move on. Because as I learned years ago...you can insult one person, who then tells 10 of their friends, then so on and son on and before you know it, 100 people think your an arse and don't want to do business with you.

Totally! The authors who are caught up in these messes seem to miss this point. And really a bad or a snarky review wont harm their sales if anything it sometimes might help in a sale. And Goodreads although seems to be focused on authors they need reviewers if they lose active members then its going to be pretty dead. Look at Shelfari which isn't as popular although with this new move they may get more active now. And another thing - all this drama has helped the profile for Goodreads - it attracts people who like to watch wankery in action.

Tori Very true. We are all drama hoes. LOLOL

Laura Sadly, this is true. I have a blog, and a shelfari account. I don't like shelfari very much, but I could make do.

I'm so frustrated by the way reviewers are being punished (because that's what it feels like. I feel like I just got a time out and my cookie taken away)
