It reads like a middle grade novel (great!) but is about twice as long as the Nancy Drew books are, and with much smaller font. Which sounds like a lot of nitpicking, but this book just feels dense because of it. Some readers may enjoy the maps in the book.

The history stuff is all fine but since the stakes are pretty low (with the Nancy Drew tone, we know Kitty will survive this, and w/o a mystery, we know who the bad guys are and what they did), it's just more filler.

I think I figured out why this book feels so long and slow-going for me despite all the adventure stuff. It's because every few chapters, the characters digress into a history lesson. There was a lot about the gold rush and now we're learning about Jack London.
