This book is hypnotic. It puts you in a trance for hundreds of pages at a time with its poetic, majestic, gorgeous dream-state reality-blurring weirdness. It's sci-fi, a thriller, a fable, a poem, a dream. Can't put it down!

"He was breathing the air of its world, adapting to its gravity." Yeah, I love Murakami's sentences... they work on so many levels. This could be talking about reading a book, writing a book, falling in love, landing on an alien world (which I guess could all be metaphors for each other...); he makes it seem so effortless.

Damn the writing is amazing in this book: smooth, flawless, everything in its right place. Reading this book is sort of like staying in a beautifully designed ultra-modern high-end hotel in New York. Without the room service.

It's strange and hypnotic. Murakami is a reader-whisperer. Quietly compelling, subtly powerful writing. To quote one of the titles from 'The Piano' soundtrack (by Michael Nyman), this book is a mood that passes through you.
