How "COCKY" can you possibly be to trademark the word "COCKY" from letting any other romance author use it? The fact that this author did this makes me question what kind of romance novels she may write... Like seriously, are you THAT much of an ASSHOLE?

Nova wrote: "😜 oh wow who did this."Faleena Hopkins, and I wasn't going to mention names but I just read an article by Jennifer L. Armentrout on her blog, and it's really getting crazy what she is doing!
Betul wrote: "It's crazy! I hope it gets resolved soon, because this ain't right!"A lot of authors are coming together to take stand in this issue. Great authors such as Whitney G. and Penelope Ward with Vi Keeland are highly affected towards this, and it really ticks me off...
Suzana wrote: "Unbelievable! It's not even like she made up this word or was even the first writer to use it."nope she did not at all, and I just found out this morning she is planning on doing a movie by herself for her books... like WOW!

Kate's Corner wrote: "This is insane. I seriously have no words for the behavior."I feel you babe, it’s a struggle to try and maintain patience for his kind of behavior but she is affecting the careers of MANY authors😞
wow, in shock with this author. Is this real, can she do that. Wow, the laws there can actually do that. I dont know much about but she is basically owning a word??
Kate's Corner wrote: "And not gaining anything out of it apart from a bad reputation."thats right babe!
Brenda wrote: "wow, in shock with this author. Is this real, can she do that. Wow, the laws there can actually do that. I dont know much about but she is basically owning a word??"I honestly have no clue how the law gave her the rights, this is just awful in every aspect...
R. wrote: "What a bunch of pretentious bullshit this is!! I certainly won't be reading anything by this author, Faleena Hopkins. EVER!! Just removed a book by her from my GR shelf!"I feel you sweetie, my friend did the same thing-- she ended up buying ALL her books and returned them right away. Why support an author who shows disrespect to other authors in the same industry?

the word us widely use in the romance world so it doesn't have enough to be identifiedable so the lawyers should be able to make it invalid

Great article! Thanks for sharing this, Christina!

Andrea wrote: "the word us widely use in the romance world so it doesn't have enough to be identifiedable so the lawyers should be able to make it invalid"Yeah Andrea, I’m hoping something is done so all of this can blow down and Faleena gets the KARMA she so rightly deserves!

Sara Reads LOTS of Romance (but is a nerd who will talk about other books too!!!!) wrote: "just read about this and I'm honestly so shitty of her"
HAHAHAHAHA! Agreeeeed!
She's not just making a movie version of her books, she claims she will join the ranks of all the great male directors with her movies.....and doesn't even mention all the great FEMALE directors out there now
R. wrote: "J.B. wrote: "She's not just making a movie version of her books, she claims she will join the ranks of all the great male directors with her movies.....and doesn't even mention all the great FEMALE..."She has an IMDB page where she's acted in several shorts. I'm smelling a "Written by, directed by, starring in" movie that wins several razzies
She has trademarked the word for her series as part of her author platform....which should be illegal but is not. And Amazon is forced to comply at this point and many authors have been subject to threats. She is an actress, photographer, director, and author. Most indie authors and even traditionally published don't have the money to fight this nonsense. It's just sad. I'm hoping that organizations like RWA will have a word in this fight.
She literally doesn't have a legal leg to stand on UNLESS they use the same font. You can't trademark a word unless it is tied to a specific font/logo. And regardless, the font that she's tried to trademark "cocky" with doesn't allow you to trademark it when you buy it. Her argument is so full of holes that it would be dismissed before it ever got to court. DON'T FALL FOR IT, AUTHORS!
Anna Serene wrote: "She literally doesn't have a legal leg to stand on UNLESS they use the same font. You can't trademark a word unless it is tied to a specific font/logo. And regardless, the font that she's tried to ..."I should clarify: You can't trademark COMMON words. If you make up a word and trademark it that's fine because that is officially your brand. So that's why when you buy off-brand Band-aids they're called "adhesive bandages" or something similar. Cocky is a word that's been around a good while, and it was used in a book title well before Faleena ever used it for her books.
She could technically sue someone if they used the word with the exactly same font because that specific thing is what is currently being protected under the law, but even that would be fought off in court when she had to admit that the font she used is trademarked itself and when she bought it she agreed that it wouldn't be used for trademark purposes in the terms & conditions.
If you have talent and write good books you don't have to resort to these lame tactics. This is Paris Hilton hot bullshit all over again. I predict this author fades into obscurity from whence she came as soon as this story dies.
Stormy wrote: "If you have talent and write good books you don't have to resort to these lame tactics. This is Paris Hilton hot bullshit all over again. Completely agree with you there sweetie, there is no need to resolve to an issue such as this one where you are taking the careers of many other indie authors away, it's just not right and inhumane.
Oh gawd. I was hoping it wasn't one of my favorite authors because that would devastate me. Whew. Thank you that it is not and I've never hear of her, so officially on my Blacklist.

No problem sweetie, and I was in your shoes as well. I was scared it was an author that I had invested time to read and support, but I had never heard this author before🙌🏼
Jamila Jasper's Cocky Cowboy, which she had to pull down when she and Amazon got the cease and desist letter from the author who is not to be named, is now back up on Amazon listed under the title The Cockiest Cowboy to Have Ever Cocked. Not usually the trope I read but I may join others in supporting an author that got pushed off Amazon by another author.
