I prefer modern translations of holy books, and Haleem's translation and notes make the Qur'an very accessible. However, I wouldn't recommend attempting any translation without the context of a biography of Muhammad's life and/or a history of Islam. Reading Lesley Hazleton's The First Muslim: The Story of Muhammad simultaneously is making it a much more informative experience!
