My suggestion for a group read for the Canberra chatters in July. Has a bit of a Secret River feel to it but more amiable relationship between convict and first people. Also more local being based on events that occurred in the Canberra region.

Garret Cotter took until page 62 (Chap 9) to get to Sydney Cove as a Convict. He's now clearing the land, reminiscent of a Frederick McCubbin painting. He's had a silent meeting with the impressive figure Ondyong while working in the bush. A well told story thus far.
