So, I'm still drowning in Frostiron fic over here, and I might come up for air by Christmas (maybe not), but meanwhile, I have a question. Why is Agent Coulson alive in ALL of these fics? Seriously, his death is like the one thing that adds a little depth to an otherwise splody summer flick. Why change that?

Don't get me wrong, I totally love Coulson. It just takes me out of the story a bit when he's alive. For some reason I can suspend disbelief enough for the Loki/Tony pairing, but not enough for the hand-waving, "it was only a flesh wound" explanation for Coulson being alive.

LenaLena But it would lend an interesting extra edge to the depths Fury is willing to go to manipulate the Avengers. He got Coulson's Captain American cards out of his locker and smeared them with blood for that purpose. Faking Coulson's death would just take that a step further.

LenaLena I haven't read anything that deals with that issue and Fury's motives. But if I were to write headcanon of fixit!fic, that is what would have happened.

LenaLena Too bad I don't actually write. But if I ever find someone who wrote it, I'll let you know.

I like that story line. Some of the FrostIron fics turn Fury into an almost sinister manipulative character who will do anything to get his way, so I don't think that would be a step too far.

LenaLena I heard that, but no one seems to know if it's set pre- or post-Avengers.

I can think of several examples, like Stargate and Buffy, but in those cases the movies were minor successes at best and were overshadowed by the shows.
