Halli turned her inheritance into a B&B, but still has a day job elsewhere with no one to watch the place, gets scared when people knock on the door in the morning and can't cook.
Plus she is pretty much a failure as a witch, but when she discovers a hidden book in a language she can't read, when one page "magically" translates itself, she decides to try the spell without a clue of what it should do.
