I actually thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a kid/teenager I was never drawn to Hobb's work but read stuff like Eddings, Tolkien and Pratchett. But in Assassin's Apprentice, the writing and style feels very natural and high quality and contains very little in the way of really awkward and cringey stuff. The feel of the story is mostly subdued fun with just shades of grimness. Reminds a bit of GRRM's Dunk&Egg stories.
