If the Hindus saw Muslims only as aliens, outsiders in India then they would always see them as only as taking less interest in the internal political life and advancement of the country.

Punjabis approved of Sir Sayed Ahmad because they did not share the bitterness against the British felt by many in and around Delhi as a result of the uprisings of 1857–8. Indeed, to Muslims in the Punjab, British rule from 1849 onwards was an act of providence that liberated them from the Sikhs.

They were finally convinced which side to choose after Congress came into power and enforced Hindu nationalism in the form of Hindi and saluting the Congress flag, Nazi-like policies which reinforced the Nazi-like policies adopted by the Germans against the Jews.

Jinnah left Indian politics as he was marginalised by his own Muslim followers, as they argued whether to place their trust in the Hindus or carve out a separate path.

A glow of communal harmony surrounded the early stages of the Khilafat movement. But when hundreds of thousands of Muslims attempted to march out of India and found no refuge in Afghanistan they returned to their homes and fields to find them occupied by Hindu neighbours.
