Are there people on goodreads who fake the number of books that they have read and are reading? If yes, why would they do that?

Araz Kojayan well, they might, but i guess this site is not only for just adding books on your virtual shelf, but also have a review written about the read books, opinions, recommendations. In real life too, what would the point of doing anything, in this case reading books, would suit ti anything if one does not reflect on his/her work and have an say :)

Raffi Well, I've never done it myself, just recently read a review in goodreads that there are fake users with fake names, who post other's reviews as their own. While there are others who increase their number of read books, by just giving stars without any reflection or opinion.
I find it absurd as well, but I wanted to know if anyone has encountered such profiles and know why they actually do this.

Hoda Marmar Oh my, that is the stupidest thing to do! One of the main purposes that i started a Goodreads account is to chronicle my readings, and keep a record of the books I've read, and the ones I'd like to read. It's like a journal, why would you write lies in your journal?!
But maybe, for commercial purposes, like booksellers and authors and publishers, these people are interested in making higher or lower ratings for certain books, a publicity thing i guess...

Raffi Interesting reflection Hoda, I never thought that people could use Goodreads for commercial purposes of lowering ratings of books. I've sensed that in Amazon, btw.

Could it also be that some people use Goodreads the same way they use Facebook? That is, they are in competition of having friends, impressing some people, adding books right and left?

I usually use the 'update status', where I track my pages and insert a comment on the way. But I seldom see people using it.

Hoda Marmar Yes, maybe they're in a popularity contest in here as well!! People can be pretty shallow, you know?
They added the 'update status' option only recently I guess. I don't use it a lot, but I like it.
You can see many authors making Goodreads accounts now, it is becoming as important as Amazon, and with time, I guess it might take over.

Raffi I guess the authors on Goodreads are increasing with the days. And even those who have published a single book are creating a special profile, with a 'follow me' style, like a fan book.
Amazon realized the threat of goodreads and Librarything, that it created its own platform called Shelfari.

Hoda Marmar I haven't heard of Shelfari before!
Librarything is a bit dull, but every time I log in, I find they're enhancing the page. Goodreads is my favorite so far.
