There are things I don't like to see in a story but others do like and vice versa; let's not tear each other down about it. There is something inherently special about the book world (with the escapism feel of it all). A good book can be a safe space for someone. Who cares if they like Twilight? Who cares if they like angst stories without happy endings? ETC, etc. If it makes them happy, support your fellow readers!

Kaye Honestly. When did it get so hard to say "I didn't like it, but I'm glad you did."

Kaye Addendum: I stand by what I said, but I also think I'm at a point in my life where I'm not going to let someone make me feel bad for liking what I like. It bugs me when people do that. Especially with books. There is something relevant to every genre of a book, there is an audience for each of those genres and it's how the community keeps growing. So, who cares what someone likes? Let it be.

Wesley I totally agree, I think the only time I challenge this is when people are enjoying something that can be harmful to others to see it celebrated (like abuse or s/t). But I think people see those objections and don't understand that it's not just a matter of opinion, and then think it's okay to object to things that are purely subjective and due to people's interests. :/

Kaye I agree. It's all very conflicting. Like, my favorite genres are science fiction and mystery/thriller, but I might occasionally enjoy a cheesy romance novel and I don't need someone whose anti-romance dragging me for it or thinking less of me because it's ~romance~. Of course I'm with you and will call out problematic issues in a story, in any genre; things that need to be addressed so they can be changed and be made aware. A good story can be written without resorting to that. That's what I would tear apart, but bringing someone down because of their preferred genre... No.

Wesley YES omg....I deal with this a lot since I'm a huge fan of urban fantasy which is pretty dominated by women authors and usually includes paranormal romance of some sort in the storylines so nerd bros always look down on it and are all like "True Fantasy Fans Only Read High Fantasy!" like just admit that you hate genres that are associated with women and go, the misogyny within the elitism of book genres is so gross.

Kaye Not to ignore everything else you said (which is 100% right), but when you said "True Fantasy Fans Only Read High Fantasy!" my first thought went to, gawd those people are probably Game of Thrones fans. Major cringe right now. They like high fantasy because it can be "historically accurate" which means a genre where women have to stay in their place.
