We are not merely imperfect creatures who must be improved: we are rebels who must lay down our arms. The first answer to the question why our cure should be painful, is that to render back the will which we have so long claimed for our own is a grevious pain. To surrender a self will inflammed & swollen with years of usurpation is a kind of death.

The settled happiness and security which we all desire, God withholds from us by the very nature of the world; but joy, pleasure, merriment, He has scattered broadcast. We are never safe, but we have plenty of fun, and some ecstasy... Our Father refreshes us on the journey with some pleasant inns, but will not encourage us to mistake them for home.

'The turning from God to self is a sin possible even to the Paradisal man, because the mere existence of a self- the mere fact that we call it 'me' -includes, from the first, the danger of self-idolatry. Since I am I, I must make an act of self surrender, however small or however easy, in living to God rather than to myself.'
