This author attempts to provide a scholarly (unbiased?) look at the history of Maroons. Section 1 describes the tenuous relationship between British landowners and colonial governors in Jamaica, Africans enslaved to work on sugar plantations and Maroons - resistant blacks who had created their own independent states in the country's hilly interior. I'm being reminded of some things and learning a lot more.
