If I can't comment on a GR friend's status updates, is it due to a setting that the friend has in place, or is it a GR glitch?

Is that friend an author or a normal user?

that usually happens if you've been blocked. I don't think friends can block you, though. They have to unfriend you first.
That's what I was thinking too... except I think if it's a normal user that blocks you shouldn't be able to see the status updates, etc at all. With authors I think it's different and you can see but not comment because we can't have private accounts.Edit: Then yeah... congratulations, you've been blocked. What did you do? :D
Isa wrote: "Edit: Then yeah... congratulations, you've been blocked. What did you do? :D"Nothing at all, that I know of! :'(
Edit: Wait, I rated one, one of their books poorly. I guess that could be why.

Isa wrote: "Oh you BITCH. Obviously you deserved it then ;)"Psh. If friending authors meant I had to stop being honest in my reviews, there'd be no point to being on Goodreads any longer.
Oh well. Time to unfriend this author so I can avoid distressing them with any future reviews.
It could also be a "friend of my enemy is my enemy" thing. There are some very silly high school like things going on on GR right now. Don't sweat it.
Hannah wrote: "Time to unfriend this author so I can avoid distressing them with any future reviews."Oh, I see. They already unfriended me. I'm just still getting their updates for some reason. Wow. How freaking mature.
1) GR settings always take awhile to filter through
2) You can still see their statuses if your other friends comment on them.

Yeah.
Honestly, I'm kinda hurt about this.

Yeah, I know. It stings because it's such a slap in the face. *hugs*

I would be, too. It's why I don't choose to initiate author-friend relationships, and why I'm just a little uncomfortable if authors follow my reviews. I don't really mind if they do since I trust that they'll be mature about my reviews (half of which are negative, and if positive, will still have negative points), but this thought is always in the back of my mind.
The UHQ Nasanta wrote: ".It's why I don't choose to initiate author-friend relationships"I'd be crushed, Hannah. *hug*
I don't friend authors either, I just join their legions of fans so I can get updates. Oh, excpt Isa and Lisa. But those are friends who happen to be awesome authors, not authors I friended. If you know what I mean.
Strange people, writers. Once, I three-starred the first (and only) book I read by a certain author who had happened to friend me a couple of months earlier. It was the author's most recent publication. I wasn't particularly harsh in my review, and I did close it on a positive note.
Mere hours after the review was up, I received a series of sarcastic "thanks for the support" PM messages by some shared friends, asking me to reconsider and edit my review. The messages were essentially carbon copies of each other. Like someone had used a slightly adapted template.
Needless to say I unfriended both the author and those people. If you got something to say, say it to my face. And being a fan is one thing. If you plan on acting like some author's minion, fine; just stay away from me.
There's a lot of junior high antics on goodreads. Sometimes it's funny to watch and sometimes it's really hurtful and ruins your day.I just sent you a friend request - maybe a new friend can balance out losing an old one??

O_O Hannah, I'm super excited. We've got 82% similarity rating (at least, when I do Shared Read books :D). I rarely find someone with more than 79% similarity rating. Will you be friends?Emma wrote: " I just join their legions of fans so I can get updates"
I did that, at first. I then un-fanned them all because 1) I wasn't really a "fan" of their works 2) my favorite authors did not have updates through GR and 3) I didn't want the authors/rabid fans to have the wrong idea about me and think that they could expect unswerving loyalty and love of all their books because I chose to "fan" them.
Politics.
At least it keeps my fans listing nice and tidy. :)
Yeah, I never fan authors. I either friend them or love them from afar. I don't see a point in following their reviews and blog posts if I don't feel free to jump in and discuss books with them.

T____T"
But then .... I'm kind of a lot to deal with. So maybe I don't blame them lol
Weasel wrote: "For me "fanning" an author isn't about any kind of relationship, the main point of it is so friends or would be friends poking around my profile can see a list of authors I like and have chosen to highlight there. "^This.
Otherwise, I'm friends with the authors I want to interact with (provided that they're on GR.)
