Shades of Jaws! Don't they know no those marks weren't caused by a boat propeller!?
And just like that tiger shark that hadn't been responsible for the little Kintner boy's death, those wolves are going to pay.
I'm still wondering who the original smilodon mated with to produce this one. Unless, of course, he's that long-lived?

One thing I forgot to mention: a little suspension of disbelief will be necessary. I know, we're talking about a saber tooth, but trust me on this, other than creating a little mayhem, Smiley wasn't there when this happened.

Ah, it's been sixteen years. So the light bulb has gone on regarding this particular kitty's arrival in the area. I still have to wonder if at the end we find he has bred with a cougar and the threat hasn't ended.
All I have to say now is I hope Norah's boy survives. <--is a bundle of nerves

Total wreck. My hands are shaking and I actually feel sick. Very, very powerful scene!

Jason's got a combination of the Chief Brody/Quint roles.
One good thing about this book: people aren't going to go off halfcocked and slaughter saber-toothed tigers.

ETA: gah I totally forgot cougars. I read a book forever ago where a bobcat mated with a regular cat and produced an offspring.
This started in Tunguska, so I guess the first cub could have bred with a tiger to begin with, and once their descendent arrived in Idaho, the cougar could have come into play.
Okay, never mind, I've explained this to my own satisfaction. Onward.
