I have read a lot about Churchill but not about Orwell. This is a terrific history. I am struck by how precarious events in history. Hitler and the Nazis really thought Halifax would succeed Chamberlain and there would be peace talks. They never thought Churchill would remain. There is the question: why did the Germans stop 8 miles from Dunkirk? Both sides were confused about Hitler's decision to hold off attacking.
