"Your company is much more preferable..."

*gag*

Also: constant use of "alright" is not all right. Ladies and gentlemen, place your bets - will I finish this?

OK, questions for those who know the Regency period better than I do: Is it ok for an unmarried woman to ride alone with a man on Rotten Row? And is it ok to have a country house party less than four months after your mother's death?

"But when a man has that large an appetite, mistresses can be a blessing."

- WHAT? What kind of book did this just morph into? I - wha - I don't even. And what do you know about his appetites anyway, Diane, hmmmmmm?

"Yes, but the smirk and foolish grin he usually wears is not very attractive."

Can you smirk and grin at the same time? skimskimskim

"I've heard of sticks that conceal a blade. Have you got such a thing?"

That'd bloody well better be a Chekhovian blade. Er, gun.

Harriet smiled and managed to wink back at him.

Ex...cuse me? In 18-oh-something? Yeah - no. I think not.

"...you shall keep me company while Steven dances with all his admirers."
Abigail stiffened...
"Is something wrong...?"
No, silly cow, it's not like you just told the woman everyone figures she's going to be a wallflower.

Then Harriet proceeds to - cluelessly - keep saying and doing things that just keep being insulting. At this point I'm skimming, because I expect Diane will show her fangs soon. Can't wait.

Diane sprang to her feet and cried, "Harriet, how could you!" before turning and running from the room.

Well, gosh, didn't see that coming at all. /sarcasm

Considering the massive spoilers in the GR description, this was pretty inevitable; considering the remarks made about this character, this was pretty inevitable; yet nothing is being done with it.

She turned numb eyes to Harriet.

- I hate having numb eyes - they put those nasty drops in when they have to do the glaucoma tests ... But I don't think that's what's meant here.

Jemidar Isn't this the one who compares herself to Austen or some such rubbish?

Tracey Yup. "It is the author’s hope that people who delight in Jane Austen’s novels will find similar pleasure in The Affairs of Harriet Walters, Spinster." I've already ranted on that in my notes for my review. It's just such a bad idea to invite comparison.

Harriet Walters, a twenty-six year old spinster, is evicted from her home and sent to live with a persnickety aunt.

That would have done it for me right there.

Tracey It's even better than it sounds - it's because of an entail. Hence some of the Austenness.

Tracey Also, the aunt was never that persnickety. I don't know. I'll give it to the 50% mark and see if I want to keep going. It's a LibraryThing giveaway, so I feel badly about quitting - but it wouldn't be the first time ...

Kim Sounds dire. I wouldn't feel bad about quitting. Life's too short! Although writing a snarky review would have its pleasures and the more you read, the more ammunition you have. ;)

With "alright", is your problem the repetition or the spelling? If it's the spelling, then although its correctness is debated in formal writing, it's fairly common usage in British and Australian English. That said, the merged spelling apparently didn't appear until the late 19th century, which I presume would make it inappropriate for the time in which this novel is set.
