I can't deny it's a compelling read. But I'm caught between convincing myself that these situations do exist so why protest and the feeling that...it's a story that confirms a particular kind of Christian world view in which dark skinned black people are indeed an afflicted set but the silver lining is that it builds character.

Winston, the detective....Was he the one who would get Petra home and Eric out of their lives forever?
Girl, that's a lot of faith to put into a Jamaican policeman. I hope you're in the right book.

Okay, I'm invested. It was a relief to read Nola comparing a light skinned girl's colour to a baby lizard because all the equating of blackness to ugliness was getting to me. I'll be better able to evaluate the beginning after I'm done.

Wish me luck. Already annoyed (to a negligible degree) that a newborn baby is described as having "kinky hair" when we all know that's not how newborn baby hair works. I guess this is her way of letting us know the character is "blackety black".
Okay. Fingers and toes crossed.
