This book isn’t perfect - it’s a little too obviously about a fantasy China - right down to their capital city’s accent adding a hard R sound to the end of every word - but it’s also an addictive piece of genre writing that’s making me stay up late reading it.

And to be fair, a lot of fantasy novels are transparently about fantasy Britain/Europe, so I’m probably being unfair.
