Yu Mei's aunt came to pick her up and brought to her to Hong Kong, after Hong Kong, Niang decided to give Yu Mei away again. "'Expecting a letter from someone, don't hold your breath!" (171)

Yu Mei is very sad. Her pet duckling PLT was ordered to be killed, her friends now know about her parents hating her. Yu Mei went to her friends house, but her stepmother Niang told her to never go to other people's houses. She disobeyed her parents, so she gets whipped. She is now ordered to leave this house, and be sent to an orphanage. "Whats going to happen to me, will I be sold?" (117)

Yu Mei just got her new adorable duckling. She is really happy and she feels like the little duckling relates to her life because the duckling also gets pushed by the other 6 other ducklings that the family has. Yu mei came back from school, "I order you to answer me rigt now" (101) This means that she always have to listen to everyone's orders because everyone hates her.

Wu Mei is a very brave and confident little girl. Mostly everyone in her family just despises her. Everyone hates her because when her mother gave birth to her 2 weeks after she was Yu Mei was born her mother died. Everyone in her family now calls her bad luck. "If you had not been born, Mama would still be alive. She died because of you. You are bad luck." (3) Her siblings get very jealous when Yu Mei gets awards.
