This is an entertaining book- I like the anecdote about the “b” in “debt” being inserted when English speakers became obsessed with Latin and wanted to make the word’s roots more recognizable. However, I feel like Bryson’s claims about Japanese and Chinese spelling in the beginning of this chapter are umm not correct. Or at least exaggerated.

“Unabridged dictionaries have about them a stern, immutable air, as if here the language has been captured once and for all, and yet from the day of publication they are inescapably out of date.”
