When she went to bed, she was sad. He hadn’t come by or even tried to talk to her at church. Maybe he was moving on and deciding he wanted nothing more to do with her. As she closed her eyes, she saw his face in front of her, filled with the anguish he’d shown the night before. She prayed that he’d make a decision soon, because she didn’t want to be left hanging for the rest of her life.

“Do you want to just go ahead and marry me now?” She laughed. “That’s not a proposal. I will not just marry you because your dad has decreed it.” “It was worth a try, wasn’t it?” “No, not at all.” Adam grinned. “I’m one of those guys…give me an inch and I’ll take a mile!”

“Together? You think we’re together?” Adam’s face grew serious. “I think I want you to be mine. I’d marry you tomorrow if I thought you’d agree and if the state of Texas would agree with it.” “I can’t agree to marry someone I don’t know well. I just can’t. And you have to meet my mother before I can even consider marrying you.”

“We’re not here as boss and employee. We’re here as man and woman on a date, so I’m allowed to hold your hand.” “I don’t know what to say to that.” “It’s God’s way of telling you to let me have my way when you don’t know what to say.” She sighed at him. “You’re going to be a pain in my backside, aren’t you, Adam?”

I can see why you don’t want this to get out. People would wonder why you don’t just find a way to see the lottery numbers, so you don’t have to do the fundraising.” Adam felt a slow blush creep over his face. “We use the money from the fundraising to make sure each boy has a trust fund by the time he leaves the ranch. The money from our lottery winnings pays for the ranch and our survival.”

Tiffani looked at him, a little worried about how attracted she was to this man. He’d be her boss, and office romances never ended well. Adam felt the wave of attraction come from her and hid a smile. He felt the same.
