That was one of the best short stories I've ever read!
The start of 'The Bloody Chamber' was definitely slow and the young heroine immature and ignorant, but oh boy did it pick up!

'Beauty and the Beast' is up there with 'Peter Pan' as being one of my all-time favourite childhood tales. "The Courtship of Mr Lyon" is a lovely, unassuming take on that story.

I can't remember how many times I have read The Bloody Chamber but I can confirm that my enjoyment and sense of horror has increased each time

The reason it has taken me so long to resume reading The Bloody Chamber is because I struggled to enjoy the first few pages of 'The Erl-King'. I found the narration to be too rambly with not much plot (unlike others in this book).
On the other hand, though the shortest story, 'The Snow Child' was a fantastic (though somewhat disturbing) piece of feminist literature.

"But has my master witnessed my triumph? Has he, my arse."
'Puss-in-Boots' is definitely the most humorous story of this collection. Following the perspective of a cat who is trying to get his master into the bedchamber the women that he is moping over, this is a much more lighthearted tale than the first 3.
That being said there still features bleak elements that are present in the other stories.

Carter has written two very different Beauty and the Beast stories.
The Courtship of Mr Lyon aligns much more with the story I am familar with. This being a quick, fun, light read - 4 stars
The Tiger's Bride is a much darker story with Beauty being lost to the Beast after her father gambles her away. That being said this story was not as heavy or dark a read as The Bloody Chamber, but seemed much slower - 3.5 stars
