Reminds me so much of Under Different Stars. Like, part of me gets it, that McKenzie has no trust in these fae at all and HAS to believably try to escape every chance she gets. But at the same time, I get exhausted with each attempt. I just want her to stay still and be normal.

Here's the juicy part of the book! McKenzie back with Kyol and learning all the truths! NOW she's really conflicted and troubled! This is great. I loved her discovery of things, Kyol still trying. It feels a lot like Moonburned in that way. I loved McKenzie saving Naito. Hopefully he'll get back to Keila and Aren in time. I always end the 1/4 at the perfect clffhangers!

Seriously. It's Kricket all over again. All the escape attempts, the antagonism and stubbornness, the almost kisses; it's torture. I love it.

Very good start! McKenzie is relatable and easy to follow and her loyalty to the Court Fae is understandable. I also like the worldbuilding with her being a "shadow reader" even if it's a little confusing. Doesn't feel like book one. A lot of back explaining and summaries of previous relations. I really like the smug, smiling Aren and the conflict of who to trust in this war.
