The chapter on Bloch is excellent -- contains a fascinating aside on French academic Mandarins which casts a bright and cynical light (not entirely accidental, one guesses) on the role played by Foucault in American academic culture during the early 1980's.

An important book. But I am not likely to return to this, as my interests are far, far away from a detailed account of the Wissenschaft of the Middle Ages at this point.

Cantor is a political conservative... nay, reactionary..., and this comes out strongly in his visceral dislike for the Annales (both Bloch and Braudel).
