At times, this book is difficult to read, in the sense that the main character can be so frustrating. At times, he is a sympathetic character, but he can also be so annoying. He "love" for Mildred is nothing but total obsession; he's such a masochist. However, the writing is so good, that it is riveting, hard to put down.
