By Jove! I think I've hit the nail on the head! "Do not trust VC." VC is Viscount Chenwith, which was Gerard's title before he became the Duke of Selburn. He rose from a low (lower?) position to one of the highest in the land. Did he have something to do with the deaths of his brother and Helen's parents?
