Reading under duress. Trying to read with an open mind and a curious stance. Wish me luck.

Melissa I read "Mean" by Myriam Gurba instead. :)

Amanda Brilliant! I'll put that on my list. I am in a fight to the death with one of my teachers. I simply cannot accept that he wants to teach American Dirt (he wants it as a bookclub book for 10th graders!!). I have sent articles, had discussions... My power as a Dept Head is limited, but I'm using every bit of it that I can muster. I'm reading this so that he can stop using that argument against me. (I did NOT buy it; it's his copy.) I've suggested at least 5 other possible books by Latinx writers, but he says this one is "better" because it's "so readable." I'm bringing him three more options today. Right now, my stance is "not on my watch." Wish me luck!

Melissa GOOD LUCK! I am supporting you 100%.
Just fyi: Mean is a memoir, so it is not an even swap. Myriam Gurba is the Latinx author who wrote the scathing review (never published) that started the debate about this book.
