Faulkner took a job shoveling coal at a power plant because he wanted to save the family farm. He wrote the book on the back of a coal shovel in his down time. His Nobel Prize acceptance speech is considered one of the best ever. The guy who wrote such depressing books about dark people had an optimistic view of humanity.
