Fascinating. Grisham begins with a geographical history of the region, explaining why Arkansas was "the last frontier". In the early 1800s, Congress appropriated $26,000 to build a federal highway from Memphis to Little Rock, but the land was so difficult to build on, the entire budget was exhausted in crossing just one county.
