Mr. King is not only the master of characterization, IMHO, his accessible and fantastical premises combine to make enjoyable reads. Tim, the noble night knocker is the kind of man we'd all like to be friends with; and Luke, the gifted protagonist, is a likable, yet believably nerdy kid on a quest.
I've often told other that Mr. King is the Twain of our Time, telling the stories in our voices.
