Loving this one.

This book challenges a lot of the ideas and concepts you might have of the Gulf in the 1830-40s. It challenges some notions about Texas history.

The author makes a seeing case that the Texas Navy was vital to Texas. He also makes a seeing case that Houston didn't understand it.

Very good.

An absolute must read for anybody who likes naval history or The History of the Republic of Texas.

Of side interest---the Texas Navy was the first military to order guns from the Colt gun company. Without the Texas Navy, Colt might have failed.

* 4 Ships---arguably meant the difference in the war!
* 3 ships were at Galveston at the Battle of San Jacinto.
* A rowboat delivered the news to the ships, before informing the Texas President.
* The Liberator and Independence were both ceased by the US. One for piracy (against the Pocket) and the other for debts.
* The Mexican Navy quickly rebuilt after indepence. 4 of their 5 ships' names referenced Texas!

I put this book off due to a heavy reading schedule, and have just resumed it. This book is going to be a very quick read... And and potentially a 5 star review. Really enjoying it.

I am loving this book so far!

Three countries patrolled the Gulf in the early 1800s---The US, Mexicans, English---Spain and French also had fleets, but couldn't project their influcence.

Mexican Navy was inept and falling apart.

Texas didn't have a Navy, but the forces it could garner caused problems for the Meicans. And it grew from there!

Book covers how Gulf played bigger role in independence than expected!
