Right now the book is talking about Jack Fleck a golfer who turned professional at 17. He is a good player but has emotional problems on the golf course. He has quit multiple tournaments even if he was in the top ten. One time he was in the top ten and said to his wife if I 3 putt another green were going. He 3 putted and withdrew from the tournament. Another time he was in 3rd place and left because of a spectator.

Ben Hogan was in the lead of the Open. There were a few groups left on the course but everyone thought Ben would win for the fifth time. Jack Fleck ended up tying him which led to an 18 hole playoff the next day. Jack Fleck won by 3 shots. After Jack won he became famous. In 1960 the U.S. Open was remembered as the Palmer-Nickalus-Hogan showdown. Arnold Palmer won. Jack Fleck would not be a regular player on tour.

It is the U.S. Open championship. There are over 150 golfers in this event. Back then in the 1900's it was the greatest golf event of the year. Each chapter is talking about 1 round in the championship. There are 4 rounds of 18 holes. Jack Fleck, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Bolt, Ward, Boros, Inman, Harris, Burke, and Littler are the leaders after 36 holes.Back then almost all the pro's shot over par throughout 72 holes.

Ben Hogan is a great player who won so many of the tournaments he played in. He started a Ben Hogan golf club company. Ben and his wife were driving to a tournament when a big bus came into their lane to pass another car and it smashed into their car. Ben jumped in front of the passenger seat to block his wife from injury, saving both their lives. His wife wasn't really injured, just bruised but Ben's leg was hurt.
