Favorite bit from Chapter 2: "Much has been made of the diversity and divisiveness that characterize Jewish life today. But never in the long course of Jewish history did all Jews agree on what they should do as Jews. That diversity -- even in the content of the body of the mitzvot -- was always understood as both inevitable and a mark of vitality."

Favorite bit from Chapter 1: "Myths are intrinsic to communities. In fact, myths create communities. When they assume narrative form, they recount the community's 'master story,' explaining how that community came into being, what distinguishes it from other communities, how it understands it distinctive history and destiny, what constitutes its unique value system."

I just got verklempt and almost cried reading the introduction. So powerful and really hitting home for me.
