I really, really want to read a “romance” with a bitchy, insecure, manipulative heroine who engineers herself into the hero’s life. Normally the shoe is on the other foot. I just find them so fleshed out, vivid, interesting and relatable. Like Tarryn Fisher heroines without being completely demented, and unfaithful.

Dísir Possibly in drama series though, less so in fiction?

Katerina Oh for sure, but you never get the safety element of it sadly!

Dísir I know...! That's why that just disappoints after a while. You got me hooked on the Turkish dramas and I went on to do another Turkish rom-com which is pretty similar to what you're looking for, though there's always the iffy safety bit there.

Katerina Omg, that makes me happy! What did you end up watching? Turks are traditionalists so I like that even with unsafe dramas it’s very... mild for lack of a better word. It’s only in books that I’m a proper stickler for safety just because of the POV factor.

Dísir lol...I ended up with Kiralik Ask, which is so similar to Erkenci Kus (EK came later and felt like a copycat after Kiralik Ask!) which was in parts, quite good. Not to mention how insanely hot the lead actor is...🔥

Anyway, it's yeah, sort of safe I think, leaving lots of room for interpretation about safety - like being celibate during separation and all. It's looooong though and surprisingly there are some suggestions of sex scenes, but never explicit.

Katerina I watched Ercenki Kus then Kiralik Ask after! I find with EK though, the female lead has such natural comedic timing/mannerisms that I ended up enjoying it more. But the storylines are very similar!

Totally agree with you on interpretation & fade to black-esque sex scenes. Even when the male lead has a girlfriend at the start of the show, you never actually see anything between them other than hugs. 😂💀 Just the way I like it!

Katerina Trust me, so long. There’s a show called Ertugrul on Netflix. One of the best rated Turkish shows. I gagged when I saw each season has 100 episodes and there’s 5 seasons. Swiftly exited. 😶

Dísir They've all got good chemistry though!

I felt that EK had a lot of 'overacting' by the female lead, so after a while I started asking why the male lead actually liked her...so it was sort of a minus in the romance department for a while. It did get better in the second season though, despite the round-and-round writing, as though it was creating drama for drama's sake.

KA made a larger impression on me, but it just could be how much I'm enamoured of the male lead! lol...

But that there's so much room for interpretation of safety and there's enough 'explanation' that you could use as evidence I guess, so it sort of satisfies my churlish safety-obsessed soul. Only wished that there was more of the couple fighting for each other instead of giving up when the going gets tough.

I'm always on the hunt for more of these turkish rom-coms, but that other ones I've read about don't seem anything like EK/KA.
