Finally reading this. I thought I was recovered enough from reading book 1 three freakin' years ago, but it's sort of tearing my heart out again.

Corinne Todd?

Phoebe I am having a LOT of trouble with the violence against the spackle. I understand/respect what Ness is doing, but it's harsh to the point of practically unreadable to me.

Regina Phoebe, I had the same experience. I still haven't moved on to #3. My 13.5 year old started #1 and had to put it down because the violence upset her so much. So you are not alone. :)

I do think the violence serves a purpose, but I have never been able to get to the end to see the conclusion of his message.

ETA: Correction, my daughter just informed she was able to finish it but it made her cry harder than anything else she read or saw (including Dr. Who or Harry Potter!).

Phoebe I'm a little over halfway done, and yeah, it's still really difficult for me to read (I even had a bit of an anxiety attack last night from it!) The hardest part is how we're clearly supposed to empathize at least to a certain extent with Todd and he's doing all these awful things--am feeling some supreme discomfort with that, whether or not he's also a victim in many ways too. I WANT to read the third book (have heard wonderful things) but at this point I also kind of want to just quickly push through the first and get it done with and read something a little less brutal.

The second book was the most difficult to read -- not because it was bad, but because of the difficult subject matter and violence -- but book 3 is a cakewalk, so don't take a break before reading it. I think you'll both love the conclusion. :D

Thanks, Damali! I'll push through. Ness's books always kind of murder me emotionally. He is really, really skilled at pushing my buttons.
